Things That Make Me Smile 1/25/13

Happy Friday! This is the first Smile post in the last month that I don't have something to say about being in the hospital! That is a wonderful feeling. And even better is that Tyler gets his PICC line removed in about an hour!!! I am so ready to touch his soft baby arm and pick him up without having to worry about hurting him or affecting the line. It's been a long road, but we're almost to the end. He has another doctor appointment next week, hopefully his last. Lots of smiles happening here. How about at your house? Don't forget to share a smile from your week in the comments!

1. Alyssa: "This is my worst favorite."

2. Alyssa: "Tyler knows that n - o means no."

3. Alyssa, to Tyler who was barely fussing: "Ok, you already screamed my eardrums outs."

4. After a discussion about Inauguration Day . . .
Jake: "Why couldn't we vote for our pastor for president?"
Me: "We could have, but he wouldn't have won. The president has to receive the majority of the votes of the whole country. Most people don't know our pastor."
Jake: "Yeah, but he'd be a good president because he believes in God and the Bible. He'd make sure everyone went to church and did right . . . And he'd close all the casinos. That's what I'd do if I were president."

5. Alyssa asked, "Is Jake gonna die since he has diarrhea?"

6. Zac: "I can't breathe, my nose is too big."

7. Zac, during dinner: "I think I had enough 'cause I have hiccups."

8.

9. Alyssa, about Extra gum: "I don't think Apple Pie was a good idea. It makes me want to swallow it."

10. Me, to Jake: "Gross! Don't blow bubbles with your spit."
Alyssa: "Why not? Tyler does it."

11. Zac, insisting that ice cream sandwiches are ice cream crackers because they have little holes all over like crackers.

12. Alyssa, after eating a snack: "May I have a sucker?"
Me: "No."
Alyssa: "What? I don't want to eat it."

13. Zac: "Can I have a chicken leg?"
Leighton: "That's going to be kinda hard."
Zac: "But can I have a chicken leg?"
Leighton: "We don't have any chicken legs."
Zac, pointing to the turkey on the table: "Can I have one of those pretend legs?"

Things That Make Me Smile 1/18/13

Happy Friday! This week started with some negatives (being in the hospital, entire family having the stomach flu, children having bad attitudes) and ended with a bunch of positives (coming home! feeling better! good check-up!) But the top 2 praises for the week??? Tyler did not have any bad reactions to the medication! And his treatment was cut by a couple weeks, so he has only 1 week left to go!

As I type this post, I'm listening to Zac and Tyler laugh and play. Their giggles bring a smile to my face. I cannot help but thank God for this wonderful life.

Here are some more aspects from the week that make me smile.

1. Listening to Jake argue with Alyssa that strawberry milk is better for you than chocolate milk because it has strawberries in it.

2. Tyler learned to shake his head.

3. I know I shared this picture on Wednesday, but the story behind it is even more precious than that beautiful smile. After almost 2 weeks of being on the antibiotic, he had 2 horrible reactions and spent more time in the hospital. (The whole story will be written soon.) We changed some things around, and here he is getting the antibiotic again. Reaction free and as happy as can be!

4. Zac calling a caterpillar a "calerpitter."

5. Jake: "And then we can eat the rat."
Me: "Yuck! We don't eat rats."
Jake: "Yum! They're meat."

6. Zac: "Mom! There's so many people in my room!"
Me: "Really?!? Who's in there?"
Zac: "Alyssa."

7. Jake: "I love you."
Me: "I love you, too."
Zac: No, you don't lub her! I lub her!"

8. Jake: "On Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader, have you ever seen someone who was?"
Me: "Hmm, I don't think so."
Jake: "Well, Papa is. He answered all the questions right every time."

9. Leighton mentioned something about Twinkies. Jake, innocently asked, "What are Twinkies?"

10. Grandma:  "Zac, you didn't finish your ice cream."
Zac: 'But it's sooo cold."

11. Zac, about a cardinal in the backyard: "He has a black face."
Grandma: "Yes, it's like he has on a mask."
Zac: "Yeah, he's a super hero!"

Things That Make Me Smile 1/12/13

It's been another week with many ups and downs. We've been admitted to the hospital, sent home, and re-admitted the next day. As I sit here and watch Leighton rock our baby boy as he's hooked to multiple wires and lines while he's getting treatment, I'm reflecting on not the downs, but the ups of the week. Here are a few that stand out.

1. Alyssa: "I only know 3 things about Jesus: that He died on the cross for our sins, He rose again, and He loves people."

2. Zac: "May I have a piece of candy?"
Me: "Yes."
Zac, giving me a big hug: "You are a sweetheart."

3. A teenage boy came to the house looking to be hired for miscellaneous jobs to raise money for treatment for his father who was just diagnosed with leukemia. I gave him a garbage bag full of pop cans to return for the deposits. As he was walking away, Jake looked out the window and asked, "Who was that?" Alyssa answered, "Garbage guy."

4. Zac, about his breath outside in the cold van: "What's all this smoke in my seat?"

5. Zac, because Tyler was crying: "I think he wants a Kit Kat."

6. Jake: "Do lakes really have those hot dog things (aka cattails) growing out of them?"

7. Zac, smelling my perfume: "Mmm, that smells soft."

8. Zac, while looking for his Blue Pillow: "Don't worry. I'm pretty sure I can find it really fast."

9. Zac tried to open our front door, but couldn't. My mom walked over and opened it. Zac told her, "Wow, you are strong to open that door!"

10. Alyssa: "I love my fuzzy pony tails. They keep my hair nice and cozy."

11. Zac: "I love you."

Me: "I love you."

Zac: "Yeah, we love each other."

Things That Make Me Smile 1/4/13

Happy Weekend! Many of you already know that we spent the last week in the hospital with our 9-month-old baby boy. It was a trying week, for sure, with plenty of heartache, but even in the midst of trials, there are still many reasons to smile. The other 3 kids stayed with my brother and sister-in-law a couple nights and with my parents the rest. Some of these smiles are ones they first experienced and passed on to me. Just like you get the ripple effect of the smiles every week, I too smiled hearing about things my precious little ones said and did.

1. My mom was cutting out pictures so Alyssa could make a  book. Alyssa told her, "Grandma, if that's too hard, I'll do it instead. I know that's a lot of work."

2. Grandma: "What color?"
Alyssa: "I don't know. There's just so many beautiful colors to choose from."

3. Jake was experimenting and stuck 2 different cups/containers together with some water inside. As the water was pouring from on end to the other, he said, "It's a seconds glass. It can't be an hour glass because it only takes seconds to be done."

4. While out to eat, Zac ordered fish for lunch. He was confused when it was brought to the table though.
Zac: "What's that?"
Uncle Gary: "That's your fish."
Zac: "No it's not!"
Uncle Gary: "Yes, it is."
Zac: "Why isn't it swimming?"

5. When Leighton was telling the kids that they couldn't wrestle with Tyler when he gets home, Zac told him, "I only want to kiss him.”

6. One of my mom's statuses on Facebook: "Why is it that when you put your grandchildren to bed and they're in there giggling and laughing and you go in to reprimand them, you end up laughing with them??"

7. The 3 kids sat around the computer and watched a video of Tyler the day after his surgery. They were all smiling and laughing and talking to him.

8. Jake and Zac trying on their tuxes for my niece's wedding. They were both sooooo handsome!

9. Seeing Tyler smile and laugh in spite of all his trials of the week.

10. Knowing that the other kids were well-cared for and having fun while Leighton and I were talking care of the baby.

11. Knowing that people everywhere were praying for our little boy and that God was watching over him.

12. Bringing Tyler home from the hospital and having the whole family together again!
