ARTistic Pursuits - Review

It is no secret that we love art in our house (Check out our Make-It Monday posts for some inspiration.) That's why I was ecstatic to review ARTistic Pursuits with the kids.

ARTistic Pursuits offers books from preschool all the way through 12th grade. Each book retails for $42.95 and presents both the expressive and the technical aspects of art in an age-appropriate manner. We had the privilege of using the K-3 book two. All three books at this level introduce children to the visual arts and to view art through history.

Book two, Stories of Artists and Their Art, teaches the students about artists from the past. It tells the stories of artists from the 13th century late Gothic period to the academy artists of the 18th century. The book is full of colorful illustrations and actual works by the artists themselves. After learning some history, the children partake in painting with watercolor, tempera, oil pastels, printmaking, sculpture with paper mache, and mixed media. (You can view sample lessons here.)

This book is great for me as the teacher. I am not artistic. I cannot draw well. I cannot create a wonderful masterpiece. But I can teach my kids about art and make ready the tools necessary to help them succeed. This book does just that. The lessons and projects are easy to understand. And they're fun! The kids enjoyed learning about the artists and then pretending to be artists themselves as they practiced the techniques they had just learned.

I recommend ARTistic Pursuits for any child that is interested in art. Or any child that likes art. Or any child that is artistic. Or even any child that is not artistic. Either way, I recommend this curriculum.
