Word of the Year: 2019

Choosing a Word of the Year is always an exciting time for me. That one little word becomes my goal for the next 365 days as I strive to weave its importance into my life. It might be something that is specifically directed towards myself like with purge, something that focuses on our family as a whole like with teach, or even something that is based on others like last year's give.

Along with that excitement though comes a tinge of apprehension. This single word is a reminder of what I need in my life. While there is the thrill of a new challenge, there is also some embarrassment that accompanies it. Just like looking into a mirror shows you all your physical flaws, my word for each year is a reflection of my life. I don't choose this word casually, but instead pray about it for weeks and allow God to show me where He wants me to change.

The word for this year came as no surprise to me.

Play.

play, verb

  1. to use any exercise for pleasure or recreation
  2. to do something not as a task or for profit, but for amusement

When it comes to the story of Mary and Martha in the end of Luke chapter 10, I relate to Martha. That drive to work, to accomplish a task, to serve your family--that speaks to me. I want my kids to have a strong work ethic and understand that work comes before play.

But far too often, I let the constant work of caring for a family overshadow the importance of my personal recreation. Managing a home, nurturing a handful of children, and home educating along with church involvements and other responsibilities fill my days. Clutter is a stress trigger for me. If I'm not careful, I am prone to let my duties keep me from truly playing with my children.

When my first couple kids were born, I spent countless hours playing with them daily. Then another was born. We started homeschooling. Days were filled with teaching and training, Make It Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Theory Thursday, Smiles on Fridays. And then another baby. Now that we have 5 children, they each have plenty of playmates to keep them interested.

And I have much to keep me busy. Blogging, my hobby and record-keeping of sorts, has taken a very distant backseat to my other responsibilities. My days are based around serving, not leisure. I tend to justify my lack of playing because my kids are with me nearly every second of every day. They help while I'm cooking, they're playing next to me while I'm folding laundry, they do school with me, they read with me. We eat meals together always. We go on family outings often. They have my attention all day.

But I need to be intentional in playing with them.

Oh, it's not that I never play with them. It's that I need to make it more of a priority. It's finding the balance of determining which chores need to be done now and which can wait 30 minutes so I can play a game with my kids. It's teaching my children that responsibilities are important and work needs to be completed, but that they also need to make time for quality recreation.

We are halfway through this year, and though I am just now finishing up this post that I started many months ago, I have been applying this word to my actions. In fact, I've tried multiple times to type this but stopped because a child asked me to help him build with Lego or play a game.

I've never liked the saying "It will be there tomorrow" referring to dirty dishes in a sink or a pile of laundry on the couch implying that playing with your kids is of utmost importance. Yes, those dishes will still be there--along with many others. God doesn't want us to ignore responsibility. But he also doesn't want us to be "cumbered about much serving" or "troubled about many things."

The last 6 months I've been more intentional in saying yes to playing.

I've been more deliberate to be like Mary, but instead of sitting at the feet of Jesus, I'm sitting on the floor with my kids. I'm taking more time, not for task or profit, but enjoyment and pleasure.

Play. That's my "good part" and my focus this year.

I initiated a challenge in the month of June to play with my kids! You can read all about it and join in the fun of 30 Days of Playing.

Jake (12 1/2), Alyssa (10 1/2), Zac (8 1/2), Tyler (6 1/2), Nicholas (3 1/2)

This week, we played board games by the fire, spent much time at church for a conference, and just enjoyed being together as a family.

1. Jake, making up a joke during Missions Week at church: "Where are cows missionaries to? . . . The uddermost part of the Earth."

2. Alyssa, rearranging the clothes at the thrift store: "I want to work here when I grow up. Wanna know why?"
Me: "Why?"
Alyssa: "I want to organize everything."

3.

4. Me, teasing because the kids were being silly: "I think I need to go back to the store."
Jake: "What! You were already there for 2 hours."
Me: "I am allowed to leave sometimes. You can't survive without me for a few hours?"
Jake, being sarcastically dramatic: "No!"
Me, laughing: "I think it was ok. You were with your dad. He can handle it."
Jake: "No, he can't. He's not a professional."

5. Nicholas calling a platypus a "potypus."

6. Jake, making up a joke: "What did the electrician say when someone called him? . . . Watt?"

7.

8. Nicholas, in the van: "I got my hotted seat on." (aka heated seat)

9. Me: "Do you know how much I love you?"
Nicholas, giggling: "Yes."
Me: "How much?"
Nicholas: "Higher than Daddy!"

Happy Friday! This week we celebrated Tyler's half birthday, made pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, and created our own versions of the Starry Night masterpiece

1. Tyler, eating homemade soup: "What is the green stuff?"

Tyler: "Is it edible?"

4. Nicholas: "Mama, where are we going?"
Me: "Aldi."
Nicholas: "Oldie? Who's that? Like a guy?"

5.

6. Nicholas, seeing deflated bounce houses: "Oh, no! They are crushed!"

7. Nicholas, putting his face right in front of mine: "You're the cutiest."

Me: "Aww, that's nice. Do you like us for other reasons, too?
Nicholas: "Yes, for love and kisses."

10. Jake: "Chartreuse."

This week, we went to a bonfire with friends, performed many science experiments, and had fun game schooling.

1. Leighton and I always wonder why the kids walk passed him to look for me around the house. Now we know.
Me: "You guys, Dad is right here. Why didn't you just ask him?"
Jake: "Because if we ask Dad, there's a 75% chance of 'no.'"

2. Nicholas, watching Double Dare: "Why do they always do Physical Challenge? That gets boring."

3. Jake, after Nicholas mispronounced a word: "Aw, he still has that little boy accent."

4. Nicholas, because he wanted hairspray: "I want my hair crunchy."

5. Me: "But, honey, this is a big kid game."
Nicholas: "I am a big kid."
Me: "You are?"
Nicholas: "Yes. And you are not a big kid."
Me: "I'm not? Well then, what am I?"
Nicholas: "You are a big mama."

6.

7. Commercial: "Every season starts with Dicks."
Jake: "No, it doesn't. It starts with a temperature change."

8. Nicholas, because he took off his pants: "I didn't stay my pants on."

9. Nicholas: "Is Gramma coming tonight?"
Me: "No, not tonight."
Nicholas: "Aww, I wanted to spend the night again!"

10. Nicholas, telling me his recipe: "Put sugar in it first. Then this. Shake it up. Then you hot it. Then you eat it!"

11. Nicholas, about music in the van: "Mama, can you turn it down so I can hear it louder?"

12. Tyler, talking about his favorite season: "Summer is my friend! Winter is my other friend . . . Spring and fall are my friends, too."

13. Alyssa: "I have a winter coat that has a hood that goes on an off."
Nicholas, concerned: "Aww, we can tape it."

Things That Make Me Smile 6/22/18

Jake (12 1/2), Alyssa (10), Zac (8 1/2), Tyler (6), Nicholas (3 1/2)

Happy Monday! Well, it wasn't a happy Monday here, per se, but Smiling at the funny things my kids say makes any day better. This week back in June, we celebrated Father's Day, took the kids strawberry picking with my mom, and celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. What a great, love-filled week!

1. Zac, because the rain was coming down hard: "It's really raining hardly."

2. Nicholas, trying to bribe me to rub his back longer: "I'll color you a picture in my class!"

3. Me: "Who do I love?"
Nicholas: "Daddy!"

4.

5. Me: "You need to make sure all this is cleaned up by the time Dad gets home. We're going to Red Robin for dinner tonight."
Nicholas: "Oh, yes! I love red robins! Are there tigers and lions? And monkeys and bears? And--"
Me: "We're not going to the zoo."
Alyssa: "Buddy, it's a restaurant."
Nicholas: "Oh, a restaurant! . . . I see lions?"

6. Zac, with his chest dripping: "Mom, I watered my chest so I can grow chest hair!"

7. Jake, because his baby teeth were gone: "Losing teeth was a big part of my income."

8.

9. This year's Father's Day questionnaires filled out by the kiddos.

10. "Love Is An Open Door" started playing.
Me, singing along: "I love crazy."
Nicholas: "No, you don't."

Things That Make Me Smile 12/29/17

Jake (12), Alyssa (9 1/2), Zac (8), Tyler (5 1/2), Nicholas (3)

Happy Friday! This is the week we celebrated Christmas, Tyler lost his first tooth, and we spent quality time with family.

1. Alyssa was dressed up for church. Nicholas saw her and said, "You so pretty!" The next morning, she walked out of her room, unbrushed hair and still in pajamas. He looked at her and said, "You so pretty again!"

2. Zac, at Ikea: "I like the way this place is organized."

3. Reading Luke 2 before opening presents Christmas morning.

4. Nicholas: "Can I have sonts?"
Me: "Songs?"
Nicholas: "Yes."
Me: "You want me to turn on music?"
Nicholas: "No. Sonts."
Me: "Songs?"
Nicholas: Yes."
Me: "You want music?"
Nicholas, grabs my hand, pulls me into the kitchen, and points: "Sonts!"
Me: "Oh, croissants!"

5. Nicholas, talking about what he was going to do the next morning: ". . . after I wake up my eyes."

6. Tyler: "Mommy, I like how you're dressed. And I like your hair . . . And I like how you're smiling at me."

7.

8. Zac, walking into my room where a fire was burning in the fireplace: "Mmm, that smells so good. I'd like to have a shirt that smells like that."

9. Nicholas, because his food was hot: "Mommy, will you blow dis up, pease?"

10. Tyler: "Brussels sprouts are so good they make my head hyper!"

11. Me: "What happened to this room?! I thought you guys cleaned it last night."
Jake: "It's called Nicholas and 10 minutes. Scratch that. Nicholas and 5 minutes."

Things That Make Me Smile 10/6/17

Jake (11 1/2), Alyssa (9 1/2), Zac (7 1/2), Tyler (5), Nicholas (2 1/2)

Happy Friday! This week Jake started an online engineering program for kids, Alyssa had a pretty big accomplishment (#8), and I've had some ups and downs with my ankle injury. Did you Smile this week?

1. Jake, because I knew what he was getting ready to do: "What! I think she just knows how to read minds."
Tyler: "I think it's because she's a mom."

2. Zac: "Lions are called the king of the jungle, but how come every picture I see of them they're not in the jungle?"

3. Tyler picked a bouquet of flowers for me.

4. Zac: "I itched it."
Jake: "You scratched it."
A minute later . . .
Zac: ". . . when I itched it."
Jake: "Scratched!"
Me: "You know, there are even adults who say that."
Jake, making a funny face and twitching his eye: "I'd better not marry someone who says that. I mean, if she says it, it's going to bother me; but if I tell her, it's going to bother her! Let's just hope for the best."

5. This scene.

6. Zac, excited: "Mom! Can we go to Australia and get a blue-tongued lizard? They say they're easy to handle."

7. Tyler: "Mama, I love you infinity . . . even when you're mad at me."

8. Alyssa read The Fellowship of the Ring.

9. Jake: "Nicky, do you want to go take a nap?"
Nicholas: "Noooooo!"
Jake: "Wow, it's not like I asked if you want to drink poison or something . . . but do you want to drink poison?"
Me: "Jacob!"
Jake, laughing: "Ok, how about sleeping powder?"

10. The handle of a laundry basket cracked, so Nicholas put a piece of tape on it to "make it feel better."

11. Tyler: "Daddy, I have a joke for you."
Leighton: "Ok."
Tyler: "Knock, knock."
Leighton: "Who's there?"
Tyler: "Who?"
Leighton: "Who who?"
Tyler: "Who let an owl in this house?"

12. Jake: "I don't have any hair on my chest. Can I get a chest toupee?"

13. Nicholas had a few small marshmallows for a snack. Leighton put the bag away in the pantry, but a few minutes later, Nicholas was walking through the kitchen trying to open the bag.
Me: "No, you already had enough."
Nicholas, innocently: "I just lookin' at 'em."

Things That Make Me Smile 9/29/17

Jake (11 1/2), Alyssa (9 1/2), Zac (7 1/2), Tyler (5 1/2), Nicholas (2 1/2)

Happy Friday! This week, Alyssa turned 9 1/2, Tyler turned 5 1/2, and I gave very personal details about my injury and what I'm learning during this process. What did you Smile about this week?

1. Me: "Did you know that I love you?"
Nicholas: "Oh! Daddy loves me!"

2. Nicholas giving "foot fives" (high fives with his feet).

3. Riddle: How can a man go 8 days without sleep?
Jake: "Coffee!"
(Do you know? The correct answer is at the bottom of this post.)

4. Zac: "I think I'm going to read extra, because I love that new book you got me."

Me: "Oh, I'm so glad!"
Zac: "Wait, is there a limit that I read?"
Me: "You have to read your required time each day, but after that you can read as much as you want."
Zac: "Really? There's no limit at all? I can just keep reading as long as I want?!"

5. Jake: "No matter what, you'll always be my favorite mother."

6.

7. Jake: "Can I play the Kindle now?"

Me: "Yes, 15 minutes."
Jake: "25."
Me: "14."
Jake: "20."
Me: "12."
Jake: "I'm trying to negotiate. 17?"
Me: "You don't negotiate with your parents. 10."
Jake: "I'm not a very good negotiator. 15?"
Me: "15."

8. Alyssa: "Knots are magical."

9. Jake: "Girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice. And boys are made of snakes and snails and puppy dog tails . . . But what are grandparents made of? . . . Ooh, I know! Presents and candy and everything dandy."

10. Jake: "Algebra would be so much easier if you didn't always have to figure out what X is."

11. Jake, writing a story: "How do you spell colonel."
Me: "C-O-L-O-N-E-L"
Jake: "C-O-L--wait. Colonel. How do you spell colonel?"
Me: "C-O-L-O-N-E-L"
Jake: "What! That doesn't even make sense! . . . I'm just going to change it to general."

Things That Make Me Smile 9/22/17

Jake (11 1/2), Alyssa (9 1/2), Zac (7 1/2), Tyler (5), Nicholas (2 1/2)

Happy Friday! This week we celebrated Talk Like A Pirate Day, Leighton took the older 2 boys hunting, and Alyssa turned 9 1/2. Did you make sure to Smile this week?

1. Me, about Nicholas, teasing: "What are we going to do with that baby. I'm pretty sure he's trouble."
Jake: "Really? You're only pretty sure?"

2, Zac, about sea snakes: "God made these creatures really special."

3. Nicholas: "God go to fweep!"
Me: "God goes to sleep?"
Alyssa: "Well, the Bible does say that God rested on the 7th day of creation."

4. Nicholas, holding a play phone: "Beep boop beep boop beep. Hello? Gramma? Papa? Why you at your house? Hello, mateys!"

5. Nicholas, noticing that the TV remote was missing a battery: "Hey, what happened? Eberyone stole it!"
Me: "Everyone stole it?"
Nicholas: "Tink about it. Jakey stole it."

6. Tyler: "Nicky's fun to play with."

7. Zac explained a whole narrative of how Alyssa was mistreating him.
Me: "Alyssa."
Alyssa, sweetly: "Yes?"
Me: "Oh, don't pretend to be innocent. What's going on?"
Alyssa: "Well, Zac's not playing nicely!"
Zac: "She's being mean to me!"
Alyssa: "He's being like Nebuchadnezzar."
Me, trying not to laugh: "How is he like Nebuchadnezzar?"
Alyssa: "He gave himself gold and gave Tyler bronze. He thinks he's the best and better than everyone else, just like Nebuchadnezzar."

8. Jake got his second deer.

9. Tyler came inside with a scraped and bloody elbow.
Tyler, proud: "Mom, look!"
Me: "Oh, no. What happened?"
Tyler: "My body got ahead of the swing and I backwards flipped off. I liked the backwards flipped off part!"
Me: "Do you want me to clean it up?"
Tyler: "No, I just want to see it!"
{10 seconds later}
Tyler, whining: "Ow, ow, owie . . . It hurts. Ooow . . . Can you do it now?"
It didn't hurt until he saw it. A complete 180 with his reaction.

10.  Alyssa: "I have a feeling I'm going to be cold or hot. I'm just not sure which one."

11. Me: "Were you a good boy tonight at church?"
Tyler: "Uh . . . hmm . . . well . . . No. Yes . . . Kinda."

Things That Make Me Smile 7/28/17

Jake (11 1/2), Alyssa (9), Zac (7 1/2), Tyler (5), Nicholas (2 1/2)

Happy Monday! This week, we went swimming at a friend's house, Zac made a vase specifically for his grandma, we bought some books and played at the park. We also moved Nicholas out of a toddler bed into a full-size bunk bed, hoping that he'll finally start to sleep at night. What made you Smile?

1. Jake: "It's kinda cool waking up and seeing what happened to your hair at night. Sometimes this part is sticking out or this one, or it will be sticking up back here. You just never know."

2. Alyssa: "I love taste testing! It's my favorite part of cooking."

3. Zac lost his top 2 middle teeth in the same day.

4. Zac: "Mom, you were the first one I kissed with no teeth!"

5. Jake: "I have a special performance for you!"
He then, with a huge smile on his face, proceeded with a series of armpit farts.
Me: "And what do you call that?"
Jake: "She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain in fart form. I thought it was absolutely hilarious!"

6. Zac: "Nicky is the cutest baby on earth! Jesus may have been cuter, but Nicky's the cutest baby on earth."

7. Jake, because the kids couldn't decide who got the last of a treat: "Hey, let's cast lots!"

8.

9. Me: "Do you want to make this into one loaf or two?"
Jake, making cinnamon bread: "Two, so we can have more!"
Me: {blank stare}
Jake: "What? Isn't two better?"
Me: "Tell me you're joking."
Jake: "No, I love it, so of course I want more. Two loaves."
Me: "Turn this one batch of dough into two loaves instead of one?"
Jake: "Right."
Me: "And that's going to be more?"
Jake: "Yes, two is more than one."
Me: "But it's the same amount of dough!"
Jake: {blank stare}

10. Alyssa, reading a poem: "This is weird. It doesn't make any sense."
Me, after reading it: "It's written by the dog. Read it again like it's the dog talking."
Alyssa: "Well, that explains the improper grammar."

Things That Make Me Smile 7/14/17

Jake (11 1/2), Alyssa (9), Zac (7 1/2), Tyler (5), Nicholas (2 1/2)

Happy Friday! The month of July was crazy busy for our family. This week, the oldest two kids went to junior camp for the first time, family from Texas came for a visit, and we went to the Toledo Zoo with friends. So many memories, so much fun.

1. Tyler, because Zac hadn't come to the table yet for his pb&j lunch: "Zachry, your sandwich is getting cold!"

2. Jake: "Next vacation, can we go sky diving?"
Me: "No!"
Jake: "Why, because it's expensive?"
Me: "That's not why."
Jake: "It's not like it's dangerous or anything. I mean, you're wearing a parachute."

3. Jake: "If at first you don't succeed . . . watch another YouTube video."

4.

5. Alyssa: "Why are so many people scared of the dentist? That's like the silliest thing. The dentist is your teeth's best friend."

6. Tyler, in the aquarium at the Toledo Zoo: "Whoa! That's an ugly fish!"
Zac: "No fish are ugly, because God's creation is beautiful."

7. Leighton, to Nicholas: "Hold your pea-pickin' horses."
Jake: "He has horses?!"
Me: "And they pick peas."
Jake: "What! I don't even have a phone, and he has horses! Those are way more expensive."

8. Tyler, watching Leighton fill water balloons: "Dad, I am not the perfect water balloon target."

9.

10. Nicholas, putting a cup upside down on my head, like a crown: "You pincess!"

11. Jake: "Want to hear the song I just made up?"
{singing to the tune of Oh, How I Love Jesus, verse}
"This is how I brush my teeth.
I brush them twice a da-ay.
I brush them 'til they're white as snow,
And brush the plaque away."

Things That Make Me Smile 7/7/17

Jake (11 1/2), Alyssa (9), Zac (7 1/2), Tyler (5), Nicholas (2 1/2)

Happy Weekend! This week Alyssa made french bread for the first time for Kids Cook Monday, Leighton and I spent a date day at Go Ape zip line and ropes course, and we all enjoyed the holiday together.

1. Zac, the day he learned to ride his bike without training wheels: "Whoa! I was riding fast! I was going at least 2 miles per hour--maybe 3!"

2. Tyler, watching fireworks: "Whoa! I saw the steam!"

3. Jake: "What kind of corn is the nicest? . . . Sweet corn."

4. Jake: "Am I your favorite oldest child?"
Me: "You sure are."
Zac: "But who's your favorite child?"
Me: "I don't have one. I have 5 favorite children. But you know what I have only 1 of? I have only 1 favorite husband."
Tyler: "Who? Daddy?"

5. The typical cooperation I get from these two.

6. Tyler: "My hair is sweating!"
Jake: "Your hair is sweating?"
Tyler: "Yes, it's literally sweating!"

7. Alyssa, at the store: "That dress has macaroni straps." (spaghetti straps)

8. Me: "Being quiet is not one of Ty's strong suits."
Zac: "Tyler and quiet have never met."

9. Tyler, watching me apply make up: "Why do you put that on?"
Me: "Because I like it."
Tyler: "But why? It doesn't seem like there's anything special about it."

10. Me: "Tyler, please be careful."
Tyler, scaling the door frame: "I got all the way to the top, and I didn't even break a single leg."

Things That Make Me Smile 6/30/17

Jake (11 1/2), Alyssa (9), Zac (7 1/2), Tyler (5), Nicholas (2 1/2)

Happy Friday! This week we went to the park, did a ton of yard work, made a bunch of granola, and had a lot of Smiles.

1. Nicholas, looking at Alyssa with a giant magnifying glass in front of her face: "You so cute!"

2. Jake: "I know this is pig, because I can taste the 'oink.'"
Me: "You know that's cow, right?"
Jake: "Oh, yeah . . . but then why is it called hamburger?"

3. Zac learned to ride his bike without training wheels!

4.

5. Alyssa: "Mom, will you come with me to kill a spider?"
Zac: "I will."

6. Tyler: "I'm so glad I picked a baby brother."
Me: "You picked him?"
Tyler: "Yeah."
Me: "Why didn't you pick a baby sister?"
Tyler: "Oh, yeah, I should have!"
Jake: "You didn't actually pick him."
Tyler: "Yes, I did. I literally picked him! Don't you remember?"
Me: "How did you pick him?"
Tyler: "You asked if I wanted a baby brother or a baby sister, and I picked brother."

7. Jake: "I went to Home Depot with Papa today to get top soil and sand to fill in the pond."
Me: "They took the pond out?"
Zac: "What! Why?"
Jake: "Because they didn't want it. Besides, Gramma already killed the fish."
Zac, laughing: "Yeah, can't you just see Gramma reach in and grab a fish and stab it with a dagger! . . . Wait. Is that why you had fish for dinner tonight?"

8. Nicholas, hugging my neck: "My pincess! My pincess!"

9. I found Nicholas walking out of the kitchen with a stick of butter. I snapped his picture, and he ran away while taking a giant bite.

10. Me, opening a bag of cinnamon: "Wow! This cinnamon is strong!"
Tyler: "Why? It won't come out of there? Like it's holding itself in the bag?"

11. Me, in frustration: "Nicholas Samuel."
Nicholas: "Nichoyas Samuel Yeaf?"

12. Nicholas: "I see Papa."
Me: "No, not today. Gramma's coming over today though."
Nicholas: "I see Papa."
Me: "Not today, sorry."
Nicholas: "Mama, look. {puts hand to mouth and gives the most pathetic cough, cough, cough} I need Papa."

Happy Friday! This week we celebrated our 14th anniversary and Father's Day, did some major yard work, spent time with out-of-town family, and had many Smiles.

1. Jake: "Did you know that taking candy from a baby isn't exactly easy? I mean, they scream."

2. Tyler: "When can we do that?"
Me: "Whenever, I guess."
Tyler: "Right now! Right now! Right now!"
Me: "Well, not right now--"
Tyler: "Today! Today! Today!"

3.

4. Tyler, adding ice cubes to soup: "I just colded my broth."

and later . . .

5. Tyler: "With you hotten your water, please?"

6. Jake: "Nicky, do you want to go see Papa tomorrow?"
Nicholas: "I go Papa now!"

7. I walked into the kitchen and found these LEGO creations sitting in the counter. I assumed they were for me. Come to find out, the boys built them for Alyssa, because she made a big fruit salad for them. Flowers and hearts to show their appreciation

8. Zac, about a Lego set: "Do you think Hulk was a good choice for Dad? 'Cause Hulk is strong and Dad is strong."

10. Tyler: "Alyssa! Mom has your archenemy--mustard!"
Me: "Archenemy? How can mustard hurt her?"
Alyssa: "I hurts my taste buds."

Things That Make Me Smile 6/16/17

Jake (11 1/2), Alyssa (9), Zac (7 1/2), Tyler (5), Nicholas (2 1/2)

Happy Friday! This week, we went bowling with friends, painted pictures, played with Legos, read books, and took things easy as we dealt with a bit of sickness. What made you Smile?

1. Tyler: "Mom, you're never lonely. God is always with you."

2. Me: "Dad is dropping off these donations, getting a movie, and picking up Chinese."
5 minutes later . . .
Tyler: "What can I eat?"
Me: "Nothing. I told you, Daddy is picking up dinner."
Tyler: "What is for dinner?"
Me: "Chinese, remember?"
Tyler: "Ohhh! I thought that was the kind of movie."

3. Jake: "What king doesn't like getting rid of stuff?"
Me: "Hmm . . . I don't know."
Jake: "King Agrippa, because he holds on to stuff." (He grips it.)

4. Alyssa and Jake made a Lego chess set that transforms to Checkers.

5. Nicky: "I ready, Mama. I ready."
Me: "You're ready? For what?"
Nicky: "I see Papa."

6. Leighton, to Jake: "You always have epiphanies right at bed time. Have your epiphanies in the afternoon."

7. Zac: "I named my arms."
Me: "Right and Left?"
Zac: "No. This one's Strong, and this one's Mighty."

8.

9. Alyssa: "Is that soy sauce?"
Me: "No, olive oil."
Alyssa: "Oh, my next guess was going to be wine."
Me: "Wine? Why would you think that?"
Alyssa: "I don't know."
Me: "Have you ever even seen wine in our house?"
Jake: "I've seen Tyler whine."

Things That Make Me Smile 6/9/17

Jake (11 1/2), Alyssa (9), Zac (7 1/2), Tyler (5), Nicholas (2)

Happy Friday! This week, we planted potatoes on my brother's farm, spent time purging things in our basement, and watched Jake perform a magic show in our living room. For school, we experimented with magnets, looked at Jake's blood under a microscope, and spent much time reading. Did you make time to Smile?

1. Alyssa: "I love you as much as a long piece of string that could fill our house."

2. Jake, coming in from playing outside: "When I closed my window the other day, I thought I forgot to lock it."
Me: "So you just tried climbing in your window?"
Jake: "Yes, ma'am, but when I climbed up, I realized it was locked."
{30 seconds later}
Jake, running through the kitchen: "Uh, I'll be right back!"
Me: "You're not climbing in through your window."
Jake: "Please?"
Me: "No."
Jake: "Just once? Pleeeeeease?"
Me: "No."
Jake: "I never get to do anything dangerous."

3.

4. Backstory: When Leighton and I were dating, we had a specific container that I gave him filled with chocolate chip cookies. When he ate them all, he would give it back, and I would return it with more homemade cookies . . .
Zac: "Mom, you know how you got Dad to marry you?"
Me: "How's that?"
Zac: "With your cookies. That's how I want someone to marry me."

5. Me: ". . . I don't really know how to describe it."
Alyssa: "I bet Papa does. He knows how to describe everything."

6. Alyssa, about Nicholas: "He's getting too big. Now I understand why you always say we're growing up too fast."

7. Nicholas making biscuits.

8. Tyler: "Where's Zac?"
Me: "At Gramma's."
Tyler: "I didn't know that."
Me: "Yeah, he went home with Gramma last night, remember?"
Tyler: "Is he coming home today?"
Me: "After church tonight."
Tyler: "Nooooooo."

9. Nicholas, talking to the stick of butter during dinner: "I love you, butter! I love you, butter! Muah!"

Things That Make Me Smile 6/2/17

Jake (11 1/2), Alyssa (9), Zac (7 1/2), Tyler (5), Nicholas (2)

These two weeks we spent on vacation were amazing. The kids (and us, ha!) had been looking forward to going to LEGOLAND Florida for so long. (Here's how we surprised them!) We were able to go two days and could easily have gone a third, because there's just so much to do. We also experienced the Orlando Science Center, did a lot of swimming (pools, splash pad, water slides), went to the beach, toured Hope Children's Home (where Leighton grew up), did some geocaching, visited with family, and so much more. We stopped in Gatlingburg, Tennessee for a couple days on the way home and did some hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Such a busy, fun, memory-filled week. The Smile list is endless this week, but here are a few of my favorite quotes.

1. Nicholas calling his bathing suit his baby soup.

2. As we were leaving the pool, it started to rain. We began running back to our room, but Alyssa got tripped up.
Alyssa, shouting: "Don't wait for me! Save yourselves!"
Jake: "Never leave a man behind! Let's go!"

3.

4. Alyssa: "It feels like I've known myself my entire life."

5. Tyler, looking at a giant hypnosis wheel: "Whoa! That's a huge lollipop!"

6. Tyler, frightened: "Ah, a mosquito!"
Alyssa: Tyler, mosquitoes are harmless. All they can do is suck your blood. "

7. Tyler: "It's called an accididnt, so you didn't do it."

8. Alyssa, as we were packing up to leave the resort: "Do you think if I put a sticky note with a Bible verse on it, they'd read it? I'm going to do John 3:16."

9. Zac, after we got home: "Our van looks so regular without the topper." (car top carrier)

10. The kids thanking us 5.2 million times, give or take, for taking them to Florida.

Things That Make Me Smile 5/19/17

Jake (11), Alyssa (9), Zac (7 1/2), Tyler (5), Nicholas (2)

Happy Friday!  This week we celebrated Mother's Day, made many preparations for vacation, played outside, and enjoyed some read-alouds. What were your Smiles this week?

1. Tyler: "How many minutes until we get home, Mama?"
Me: "I don't know."
Tyler: "You don't know? Well then, how many seconds until we get home?"

2. Tyler: "Mom! I have 125 monies!"

3. Tyler: "Mom, can I pause with my yogurt?"
Me: "Pause with it?"
Tyler: "Yeah, pause. It means to take a tiny break, to stop for a minute."

4.

5. Nicholas got the mail with me. He picked up the package sitting on the porch and shouted to the mailman down the street: "Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, guy!"

6. Alyssa, her third time reading Captain Absolutely: "The last time I read this, it made me want to read my Bible more."

7. Jake: "Since tomorrow is Mother's Day, I washed really well in the shower. I scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed. I think I rubbed my skin off. Feel how smooth it is."
8.

9.  Jake: "It's kinda hard to believe Dad loves us. I mean, he leaves us every day until 5:00. I think he does it just to get away from the chaos."
Me: "You sound like your mother."
Jake: "That's where I got it."

10. Alyssa: "Mom, you know what's really cool about books with no pictures? You can make up your own with the details they give you. It's the best part."

Happy Monday! This week, we took the kids to Greenfield Village and took advantage of our rides pass by going on the Model Ts, the train, an old bus, a horse-drawn carriage, and the carousel multiple times. We also enjoyed the playground and had a picnic. There were many Smiles!

1. Me: "Jacob, don't be gross."
Jake: "It's what boys do. We can't help it."

2. Jake: "You can call money dough which is a female deer, but you can also call it buck which is a male deer."

3. At Greenfield Village --
Lady driving the horse-drawn carriage: "I want the kids to close their eyes and make a wish as we go over the covered bridge."
Tyler, opening his eyes: "Hey, it didn't happen!"
Me: "What did you wish for?"
Tyler: "I wished for the whole world to be covered in ice cream!"

4.

5. Tyler, about the arm a bands to show that we had tickets for the rides at the Village : "Do we get to keep these?"
Me: "Yes."
Tyler: "Yay! I want to keep this on my whole entire life!"
{2 minutes later}
Tyler: "Can I take this off now?"

6. Jake, before going someplace new for the first time: "I chose khakis and a red polo because I'm going to walk in and introduce myself, 'Hi, I'm Jake from State Farm.'" (And then he did.)

7. Alyssa, while eating breakfast I cooked: "My mouth is full of goodness!"

8.

9. Tyler: "What is RV?"
Zac: "Rolling vehicle."
Me: "Recreational vehicle."
Zac: "Oohhhhh."

10. Tyler, looking at a forest: "I love seeing all the trees together. It's like a family!"

This week we celebrated Alyssa's and Tyler's birthdays with a party, spent a beautiful day out geocaching, and enjoyed a wonderful Easter holiday. I hope you've had many reasons to Smile.

1. Me, leaving the house: "Oh, good, it's not raining."
Alyssa: "I prayed. Twice."

2. Jake, after eating an ice cream sundae and commenting on the sweetness of it: "You know what I noticed? The older you get the less sugar you can handle."

3.

4. Jake, listing off everything in his backpack for geocaching: ". . two Bibles--"
Me: "Two Bibles?"
Jake: "I need to be prepared."
5. Tyler, after I finished assembling my Creator Expert Lego set: "I am impressed with this set ... what does impressed mean?

6. Alyssa: "I can't wait until Dad gets home so he can see me in real life and not just a picture of me wearing this dress."

7. Alyssa: "Knowing how to make a pbj is a survival skill."

8. Three of the kids were fussing over Nicholas who (barely) got hurt.Jake  piped up, "Is he breathing? Is there blood? He's fine."
